The Eight Trigrams — Fundamental Forces of the Universe

The eight trigrams are the foundation of the I-Ching system. Each trigram consists of three lines (yin or yang) and represents a basic natural phenomenon.

【Qian ☰ — Heaven】 Three yang lines. Symbolizes creativity, strength, and initiative. Its virtue is activity. Represents the father, the head, and winter-spring transition.

【Kun ☷ — Earth】 Three yin lines. Symbolizes receptivity, nurturing, and devotion. Its virtue is yielding. Represents the mother and late summer.

【Zhen ☳ — Thunder】 One yang under two yin. Symbolizes arousal, action, and breakthrough. Its virtue is movement. Represents spring and the east.

【Xun ☴ — Wind】 One yin under two yang. Symbolizes penetration, gentleness, and adaptability. Its virtue is entering. Represents early summer.

【Kan ☵ — Water】 One yang trapped between two yin. Symbolizes danger, flow, and wisdom. Its virtue is falling. Represents winter and the north.

【Li ☲ — Fire】 One yin held between two yang. Symbolizes light, clarity, and civilization. Its virtue is radiance. Represents summer and the south.

【Gen ☶ — Mountain】 One yang above two yin. Symbolizes stillness, rest, and stability. Its virtue is stopping. Represents the northeast.

【Dui ☱ — Lake】 One yin above two yang. Symbolizes joy, communication, and satisfaction. Its virtue is pleasure. Represents autumn and the west.
